City of Friendswood
July 31, 2009
Quakers were the original inhabitants of the City of Friendswood. This community was founded in 1895 and has grown considerably since the early days of its Quaker founders. The City of Friendswood now encompasses part of the northern region of Galveston County and the southern region of Harris County. Clear Creek runs through the community and offers direct water access into Clear Lake which empties into Galveston Bay and then on to the Gulf of Mexico.
English Quaker settlers, Frank Jacob Brown and Thomas Hadley Lewis, founded the Friendswood community and felt that this was their “promised land”. Friendswood, developed as a farming community, originally flourished with fig orchards, Satsuma orange groves and rice fields. The current population of Friendswood is over 30,000. Although the city is growing in population, its small town values are still quite present.
Friendswood is mainly a residential area with a unique geographic location that allows its residents to have the convenience of easily working in Downtown Houston, Houston’s Texas Medical Center, Galveston’s UTMB, the petrochemical industries, and the NASA community.
The City of Friendswood is a growing community with many new housing developments and master-planned communities and established neighborhoods. Even with land at a premium, prospective residents can still find homes on larger lots. The options are limitless - from condos to grand estates, to everything in between.
