The original Quaker residents of this municipality focused on the philosophies of church, family and education. This dedication to community and family still exists in the community of Friendswood. As proof of this continuing heritage the Friendswood Independent School District (FISD) continues to be recognized in the state of Texas for test scores and accountability ratings. Additionally, Friendswood High School has been named as one of the top 10 High Schools in the Houston area. The FISD theme “Journey to Excellence” has been incorporated into programs they initiate in their schools. Both the High School and Junior High School are involved in a pre-engineering program that works side by side with NASA based businesses and corporate programs. These programs enrich the student body to teach them how their education can benefit their futures. The “Journey to Excellence” theme transitions into FISD’s extracurricular programs as well. FISD offers numerous activities including numerous athletic programs, drama, choir, band, service organizations, and clubs. Students also have the opportunity to compete academically in programs such as Academic Decathlon, speech, debate, and University Interscholastic League (UIL).
