Dickinson TX
August 20, 2007
Dickinson, Texas sits in the northwest corner of Galveston County. Dickinson, named after John Dickinson shortly before 1850, was a settlement along the Dickinson Bayou. The Galveston, Houston & Henderson Railroad (GH & H) was built straight through Dickinson. The town was useful to the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was soon known in the 1890’s for its suitable soil. The primary attraction was its proven heartiness for growing fruit, cane, berries and potatoes. Galvestonians enjoyed the vast 40 acre park space in Dickinson that was created by Fred M. Nichols, a descendant of the original Dickinson Land and Improvement Association. By 1911, prominent Galvestonians established the Oleander Country Club and built homes in the area. In the early 1900’s Italian immigrants from Sicily began to help develop the population of Dickinson too.
Today, industrialization, growth of the oil & gas industries, and NASA have collectively helped to increase the population of Dickinson. In 2000, the census bureau reported a population of 17,093 with 671 businesses. This number has surely multiplied with the increase of residential and commercial properties just in the past 5 years.
There has been a recent boom in commercial construction down the I-45 corridor. New stores now open include: Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, and JC Penny’s along with many new restaurants.
