Kemah, Texas
February 11, 2009
The quaint city of Kemah is located on the Galveston Bay approximately twenty-five miles northwest of Galveston. Kemah, originally called Evergreen, was changed to “Kemah” (an Indian word meaning "wind in the face") by its residents so a Post Office could be stationed in the town. It was officially renamed Kemah, for its position on the bay in 1907, when the post office opened.
Kemah has been a destination for generations of Houstonians seeking an easy get-away for boating, fishing, dining, and shopping. Originally Kemah was home to hay producers, farm homes, summer homes and fishing camps. Today the Kemah Boardwalk, a 14-acre complex complete with musical entertainment, themed restaurants, hotel, amusement rides, 4-D Theater, marina and a miniature train entertains this generation of Houstonians.
Kemah is also home to the third largest fleet of recreational boats in the United States. Even though Kemah is a destination for recreational boating it still captivates its residents and visitors with its small town charm. Little cottages line the streets of downtown Kemah. Shopping and dining destinations are always plentiful whether you are on the bustling Boardwalk or you prefer to stroll down the quaint downtown streets.
The Kemah Boardwalk has many events for families to enjoy. They include: Kids festivals, Friday night fireworks in the summer, family movie night, a crawfish festival, a spectacular laser show, Rock the Dock, Jazz and Zydeco festivals and several holiday celebrations.
If you are looking to relax by the water or have fun in the sun Kemah, Texas just might be the place for you to visit.
