Clear Lake City History
Clear Lake City, developed by the Friendswood Development Company, is an attractive master-planned community located in southeast Harris County, Texas. Development of Clear Lake began on land sold to the Humble Oil and Refinery Company (now known as Exxon) by James Marion West in 1938. The West mansion still sits on NASA Parkway overlooking picturesque Clear Lake.
Clear Lake City is now the 2nd largest planned community in the Houston area. It is centrally located between downtown Houston and Galveston, with just a 30 minute drive in either direction.
A portion of Clear Lake City was annexed by Harris County in 1978. When speaking about the Clear Lake area many people also think of the other cities that surround the lake, these include the cities of Seabrook, Nassau Bay, Kemah and League City. The area has grown so much over the years that the President and CEO of the Clear Lake Economic Development Foundation stated that "Our region now extends well beyond the shores of Clear Lake. We decided to change the name to Bay Area Houston, which gives a clearer image of our territory." Other cities that Bay Area Houston encompasses are LaPorte, Pasadena, Webster, Friendswood, and Dickinson.
Originally the Clear Lake area's expansion was primarily due to the development of the National Aeronautics Space Agency (NASA). The community sits adjacent to the Johnson Space Center which serves as Mission Control for NASA. With the development of the Johnson Space Center, the community surrounding it began to flourish. NASA brought Astronauts, engineers, and many business professionals into the region. Today many other industries, such as PetroChemical, biotechnology, recreation and tourism, provide economic support to the area.
Bay Area Houston is an ideal place to enjoy year round because of its moderate climate. It is often referred to as the "boating capital of Texas". So you can imagine there are many Marinas! Visitors and residents often enjoy boating, kayaking, jet skiing, windsurfing and fishing. You can even view the Lake from above by parasailing. Are you up for a game of golf? The Bay Oaks Country Club and the Magnolia Creek Golf Links are just some of your choices. Have you ever wanted to hit a ball in Boston's Fenway Park or Chicago's Wrigley Field? With a short drive to League City you can play baseball at a scaled down replica of these stadiums. Bay Area Houston has a vast recreation and entertainment menu. Besides water activities and golfing there are tennis centers, indoor/outdoor playgrounds, indoor/outdoor pools, gymnasiums, Little League, and more.
Bay Area Houston has evolved from a small community to a diverse and vibrant element of the greater Houston metropolitan area.
